“Holla Back; WE GOT Y’ALLS BACKS!”
Unity Day is an annual Youth Together event put on by our very own youth leaders and community partners. Unity Day was created in 2001 as a response to racial tension, build solidarity within the schools, and to promote peace within our community.
Our annual Unity Day is scheduled at Skyline High School on Friday, October 20th, 2017 and Castlemont High School on Friday, October 27th, 2017. This year’s theme is “Holla Back; WE GOT Y’ALLS BACKS!” With the tense and often overwhelming political landscape that we have, many of the youth in our communities are not looking for a way to escape, but solutions to remedy these issues.
“Holla Back; We Got Your Back” is a call and response, originating with the University of Michigan as a way for Black students to show visibility and support within the communities, and is often times used as a chant during rallies or speak outs. It is both an affirmation of the community, and who will advocate for us in times of need. We understand that with our current political administration, our communities have continuously been under attack. In these times, we want to remind our community to celebrate our resilience, to fight for justice, and to practice solidarity with one another.
