Youth Together is embarking on an ambitious but imperative campaign. Our youth from Oakland to Richmond are working to transform education funding system to be more transparent and equitable.
Incoming State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson took a big step recently in publically acknowledging what countless students, parents, teachers, and those of us involved in the struggle for quality public education have known for years now: Our schools are indeed in a state of emergency. When students don’t have schoolbooks to take home, when schools implement furlough days, when students are forced to try and learn something in a class with 45 other students and 1 teacher-we must all stop and recognize that our state is in big trouble. Youth Together students are courageously confronting this alarming crisis because they have rightly concluded that the steady erosion of California’s budget for public education amounts to a profound disinvestment in our youth and the future of our state.
We have a vision of students ensuring that all California schools are fully funded using a funding formula that is clear and equitable. So, we are engaging allies and working in coalition with them to create a strategy for reminding Californians and the people who govern our state that the education of our children is a top priority. We know that this campaign will impact so many people and we want to make sure that as we are creating our campaign strategy, we include the voices and vision of partners who we have worked with in the past. Moving ahead, we are looking forward to a full shift in education funding priorities that reflects our organization’s and our community’s vision for public education.
