I am deeply disturbed by the rape that happened to one of your students. Hate crimes like this affect the whole community, and the complicity of observers demands community accountability. I live in Oakland, but would like to support any efforts that may be underway to protest this violent act.

There will be a press conference tomorrow at 3:00 in front of Richmond High School. We are asking that the as many people as possible show up to protest such an atrocity.

After talking to some students at Richmond, I feel so helpless for not being back in Richmond. I just keep thinking that as adults we need to stop ignoring young people and we need to really concentrate on our young men, we are creating such an unsafe society for young people of color both men and womyn. I also feel …as though Richmond high school also has some of the most amazing students, community members and teachers that I have ever met. And dumb folks from across the country are calling harassing the school calling the students animals. I am sorry but young people are not born this way we as adults have to look back at ourselves and take responsibility for the world we have created.

Has anyone ever suggested student uniforms? To me having student wear uniforms is the first and most basic tool that high schools should use to instill a sense of unity to a student body. It also does two other important things. It puts the focus on education. It reminds everyone that you’re at school for a purpose. To learn. Also, it takes away all of the peer pressue, jealousy or hatred, or embarrassment associated with trying to wear the latest fashions.

    Good luck Richmond High.
